Today’s Title: Absolute Trust In Friends
Scripture:
"Trust ye not in a friend, put ye not confidence in a guide: keep the doors of thy mouth from her that lieth in thy bosom." — Micah 7:5 (KJV)
Devotional Message:
One of the greatest mistakes a person can make is placing their absolute trust in friends. While friendship is a gift from God and true friends can be a blessing, the reality is that human beings are fallible. Friends can fail, betray, disappoint, and even turn against you. That is why the Bible warns us not to put our full confidence in man but to trust in God alone.
Micah 7:5 is a strong caution against blind trust in people. Many have been deceived, hurt, and broken because they placed too much faith in friends, forgetting that even the closest companions can change. The only One who is completely reliable is God.
Practical Examples of the Foolishness of Trusting Friends
1. Samson: Betrayed by the One He Loved
Samson trusted Delilah with the secret of his strength, believing she loved him. But she betrayed him to the Philistines for money (Judges 16:16-21). He was captured, blinded, and enslaved.
Many today have shared deep secrets with friends, only to have those same friends use the information against them. Wisdom teaches us to be discerning with whom we trust.
2. David and Ahithophel: A Close Counselor Turned Enemy
Ahithophel was one of David’s trusted advisers, but he later betrayed him and joined Absalom’s rebellion (2 Samuel 15:31). David was heartbroken because he never expected such betrayal from a close confidant.
Sometimes, the people we trust the most are the ones who hurt us the deepest. That is why our ultimate trust must be in God, not man.
3. Jesus and Judas: A Friend Turned Betrayer
Judas was one of Jesus’ twelve disciples, yet he betrayed Him for thirty pieces of silver (Matthew 26:14-16). Jesus knew Judas’ heart, but He still loved him. However, His trust remained in the Father, not in man.
Many have experienced betrayal from those they considered close friends. But rather than becoming bitter, we should learn to put our trust in God, who never fails.
Modern-Day Signs of Trusting Friends Foolishly
1. Telling Friends Everything – Sharing all personal details, forgetting that human nature can change.
2. Depending Solely on Friends for Support – Expecting friends to always be there and never disappoint.
3. Ignoring Red Flags – Overlooking warning signs in friendships due to blind trust.
4. Lending Money Without Caution – Assuming friends will always pay back, only to face disappointment.
5. Believing Friends Over God’s Word – Taking advice from friends even when it contradicts Scripture.
The Dangers of Trusting Friends Too Much
1. Betrayal and Disappointment – Even close friends can turn against you.
2. Loss of Personal Secrets – What you share today can be used against you tomorrow.
3. Emotional and Spiritual Pain – A broken friendship can cause deep wounds.
4. Misleading Advice – Not all friends give godly counsel; some lead people astray.
5. Idolatry of Friendship – When you trust friends more than God, it becomes a sin.
How to Avoid the Foolishness of Trusting Friends Blindly
1. Put Your Trust in God First – "It is better to trust in the Lord than to put confidence in man." (Psalm 118:8)
2. Be Discerning – Not everyone who calls you a friend is truly for you.
3. Keep Some Things Private – Not all information should be shared, even with close friends.
4. Test Friendships Over Time – True friends prove themselves in the long run.
5. Forgive But Be Wise – If a friend betrays you, forgive but learn from the experience.

1. Have you ever been hurt because you trusted a friend too much?
2. Are you placing more confidence in friends than in God?
3. How can you build relationships with wisdom and discernment?
Prayer:
Lord, help me to be wise in my relationships. Teach me to trust You above all and to be discerning in my friendships. Let my confidence be in You, not in man. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Examine your friendships today. Are you placing your ultimate trust in God, or are you depending too much on people? Learn to love, trust wisely, and rely fully on God!
